Colorado Does What It Needed To

A solid, if maybe unconvincing, win in Commerce City Saturday night is what the Rapids needed entering this 3 game week.  SKC made it easier by putting up a red card in each half but even before the first Colorado looked like the better team.  That said, it wasn't all easy, a former Rapid had two good chances to put SKC on the scoreboard, but Calvin Harris couldn't quite reach the end of a perfect cross, then put a breakaway off the post.  Part of the reason he's no longer in Colorado.

With the win the Rapids would be in the last playoff spot if the season ended today, with a wild card game in Seattle.  They are dead on the Bodmer Line at 1.32 PPG, putting us on track for the exact average point total (44-45) for the last playoff spot.

The reason this game wasn't that convincing is that the Rapids still struggled to find the final shot.  28 shots, 7 big chances, only 4 shots on target (1 off the bar too).  2 of them went in, which is great, but up an man they managed only two shots on goal, and up two men they only managed one (Rafa's goal).  That's actually half as many as they had against Austin two weeks ago 11v11.  14 shots on target in the 4 games since we've been back is still something that needs to be fixed.

Still, a win is a win and 3 wins in 3 at home is a great set of results.  We're doing what we need to when we need to.  Only one goal allowed since the break too.  It does leave us in a spot where writing off the rest of the league season to focus on the Cups would be absurd, but going all in on the playoff run is unlikely to pay off with significantly improved odds.  So it continues to be a balancing act.

Another positive sign from this game was the assists on both goals.  On the first our new signing, Youssef Maziz, dropped a great corner kick right on to Cannon's head.  If he can bring a Jack Price-esque style to our set pieces that would be a good addition.  Maziz looked good during his play from the field as well.  On the second goal Aaronson made a nice move and put a cross actually in the est place it could go, slightly behind Rafa, which allowed Navarro to spin, receive the ball, and then spin back with time to pick his spot.  If Youssef can unlock Paxten that's w win.

Also that goal tied Rafa with Diego Rubio with 38 goals all-time (regular season matches), 4th on the all-time list.  Next up is a tie for 2nd between Omar Cummings and Paul Bravo at 39.  Presumably he gets to and passes that this season, barring injury.  Then its a jump up to Conor Casey on the top of the record book at 50.

Next up is a tough one, LAFC at home on short rest.  Then a trip out to SoCal to play San Diego before a week off before the Rocky Mountain Cup.  Beating FSL is a must but getting one point out of the other two games would be acceptable, more than that would be a good step into showing we're improving from what we've been.

Man of the Match: Reggie Cannon.  Scored the first goal, drew the second red card, and overall was active and involved in a way we hadn't seen for a while.  Right back hasn't been fully locked down this seasons, maybe this is a step towards really claiming it again.

OG Matchup

The KC Wiz, er, Kansas City Wizards, er, Sporting Kansas City are in town for tomorrow night's matchup between two original teams.  Our I-70s rivals are in contention for the Wooden Spoon this season and this is a game we must take advantage of.  Before the match the team is going to have a short celebration to honor Keegan Rosenberry's 200th appearance last game.  The ceremony will start at 7:15 with kickoff at the normal 7:30 (or thereabouts).

Player Availability:

No surprises there.  The one surprise is the name that's not there, Youssef Maziz.  Our new midfielder got his visa earlier this week and is eligible for selection.  He was not allowed to train with the team until the paperwork came through though, he was only allowed to do individual fitness and skill training.  That makes it very unlikely that he starts but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 15-20 minutes if the game state allows it.

Also Atencio, Rafa Navarro, and Ojediran are all one yellow card from suspension.

This seems straight forward.  While I would start Yapi its clear that Wells doesn't rate him as a starter.  Minoungou and Sealy seem to be the favored winger options.  Everyone else is fairly self-explanatory.

Prediction: 2-0 win, goals by Navarro and Yapi (off the bench).  There's really no excuse to not wi this game by at least 2.  KC is a horrible team and we need to show we can handle teams like this.  Any sort of struggle and its a good sign we should just focus on the Rocky Mountain and Open Cups for the rest of the season.

Rapids Sell Herrington For Record Amount

So long Lucas, ,we hardly knew you.  The long-rumored deal with Hull City was made official today.  Per Tom Bogert and Braidon Nourse the terms were $17 million up front, $6 million in potential performance add-ons, and a 15% sell-on fee.  Depending on the exact number this will probably be the 7th highest fee paid for a MLS player and if the performance incentives hit (and they should) it would jump to second, based on Wikipedia data.  Its easily the most ever paid for a defender, the prior record being the $8M the Rapids got for Moise Bombito.

This is a deal the Rapids had to make.  Yes we're midseason and in a Cup run, but you can't pass up what could easily be a $25M total payday for an 18 year old you spent a million on less than a year ago.  Its not fair to the player and its not a smart move.  And credit to the Rapids, getting Williams in appears to have given us sufficient coverage to handle this move.

As far as Herrington goes, he is very likely going to have the best post-Rapids career of any former player.  Rapids players have gone on to do good things, from Marcus Hahnemann to Auston Trusty, but no player has left this young at this value.  There's a decent chance we're going to be able to say "I saw that guy play when he was just coming up".  Lucas was fun to watch and composed beyond his years.

With this move arguably the most important 6-12 months in Rapids history has started.  Padraig Smith came out and said today that all the money from the sale will be reinvested into the club.  Then we have the USOC run.  At the end of the season the KSE leadership will have to decide if they're keeping Smith, and in what capacity.  Once the calendar flips to 2027 we've got the sprint season and then the start of the winter schedule.  Each of these are major turning points for this club.  Which makes the following both expected and disappointing 

Sport5 (Israel's ESPN) is reporting a deal has been struck for Maccabi Tel Aviv forward Sayed Abu Farhi.  The report is $6M plus a 25% sell-on clause.  Burgundy Wave can confirm the Rapids are interested in him, but can not confirm the size of the offer.  Abu Farhi is listed as a forward but some basic research suggests he might be more of a winger or outside striker.  Transfermrkt, not always the most reliable, lists his value at about $2.3M

This seems like a massive overpay for a player from a league that's not as good as MLS.  However if the deal is 6 million Israeli shekels + the sell-on, that's about $2M, which would be much more in line with his value.  Still feels like an overpay but he wouldn't instantly become the second highest purchased Rapids player.  If we really pay $6M for him it feels like another Padraig Smith special, where we look for a diamond in the rough instead of paying for proven talent.

Reports like that just reinforces the feeling I have that this team is not prepared for this critical juncture.  I haven't seen anything since Kevin Demoff took more of a hands on approach 9-10 months ago that suggests this club is going to change course and really take advantage of this.  Its the same 'Moneyball' approach that, obviously, paid off with Herrington but does not look repeatable anywhere else than center back and the same hesitancy to spend notable money in notable areas of need on or off the field.  Smith is out there making the same sort of promises that he makes every summer, and based on what we've seen so far he's not backing them up with real moves that will pay off now.  Quite simply Padraig Smith can not return in any sporting capacity if the club expects to be taken seriously by the fans and the rest of the league.

As Burgundy Wave put it today:

In April, the Colorado Rapids had their most profitable home game in club history. Today, they broke their record transfer fee by double. There is no excuse for leaving the scoreboard at DSGP as it is. It needs to be replaced in 2027.

 Not just the scoreboard.  There's no excuse for this team to still be a moneyballing-also ran in 2027.

Stats Say Good, Eye Test Says Bad

 

Saturday night was a rough watch.  Colorado had pretty much all the play.  64% possession.  Eleven corners to none.  50 touches in the box to 8.  5 big chances to 1.  At no point did it feel like Austin was going to score unless they got lucky on a free kick or got a weird deflection on a ball.

The problem is that it didn't feel like the Rapids were going to score either.  Only one of those "big chances" really felt dangerous, and that was in a scrum in the box in the first few minutes of the game.  Otherwise it was the same going through the motions that we've seen for a few games.  The Rapids did create more chances than they have been, but there was still a dearth of good final passes to set up good shots.

The last minute PK was a gift from Austin, as there was no way we were going to score on our own in this one.  Rafa did a great job burying it, it seems like his PK issues are behind him now that he's stopped the stutter-step.  But it felt more like 2 points stolen than a win we truly deserved, even if the stats said otherwise.

This is now 10 league games in a row without scoring more than one goal, that most in a single season since a 12 game stretch in late spring/early summer 2015.  The fact that we've gotten 6 points in 3 games out of the World Cup break while only scoring 2 goals is a testament to our defense, and the (lack of) quality of our opponents.  Of course our defense is going to take a serious hit this week with the sale of Herrington (more on that later this week when it becomes official).

The Rapids get a week off with the Leagues Cup weekend, and will be back hope playing last-place KC on the 15th.  A must win, and a must win convincingly, sort of game for them.

Man of the Match: Loic Williams.  Stepped in for the suspended Holding and was nice and smooth holding down that left center back spot.  One he's going to be starting in the rest of the season now.  While the Rapids struggle to fill other positions they seem to have a nose for center backs.

A Must Win On Colorado Day

Unless we have an early Rocky Mountain Cup match in the future this will be the only time Colorado Day is a must win but it is this year.  Austin FC is in town and they are the second worst team in the West (but better than 4 teams in the East because the bottom of the East is a trash fire).  This needs to be an unquestionable 3 points for the Rapids or we'll be left playing for the Rocky Mountain and Open Cups because the playoffs will be a lost cause.  Kickoff is at 7:30.

No notable surprises there.  Maziz was signed as expected today but is waiting on his paperwork (visa) before he can play.

The defense seems to set itself, maybe Thompson at RB instead of Cannon.  The real question marks are which two wingers get a shot because none of them have been impressive in this run of no firepower.

Prediction: 1-0 Colorado, goal by Rafa.  I think we get the 3 points, but its not as convincing as it should be.  Defensively we're solid but we still fail to make enough chances despite playing one of the worst defenses in the league.

Enter Youssef Maziz

The Rapids are teasing the announcement of a new addition at 10am tomorrow.  First reported by Tom Bogert and confirmed by Brenden Ploen and Burgundy Wave, this is expected to be midfielder Youssef Maziz.

Maziz is a 28 year old (as of last month) attacking midfielder who's play is mainly as a chance creator, something the team desperately needs.  Born in France he is of Moroccan decent and has dual nationality.  His only international caps are two appearances with the French U-16 team.  He joined the Metz youth academy at 15 and stayed with the club working his way up to the first team in 2017 but spent most of his time on loan in the lower French leagues until he left Metz for Belgian side OH Leuven in 2023.  OHL has been a solid mid-table team in his time there.

Youssef is available on a free transfer as he's now out of contract and is expected to sign a TAM deal.  He'll be available as soon as his visa is processed and given the current government issues with visas we probably shouldn't expect that too quickly.  I would assume he would slot into the starting lineup as soon as he's available, so I'd expect the center trio to be Ojediran, Maziz, and Aaronson.

Obviously Maziz is an unknown to all of us, but the reality of being a Rapids fan is that we're not going to go out and assign a 'name' player.  Far too often that's meant we get a Namli or a Ilic, but occasionally we find a Rafa or a Herrington.  The positive sign with this signing is this isn't a player who doesn't fit the team (at least on paper) or is coming in at a established position.  This is somebody who fills a rea hole on the team, something our summer signings haven't always been able to say.  This doesn't turn us into a contender, but it seems like a move to push us that direction.

Deja Vu

Another game against St. Louis, another Holding red card, another 1-0 loss, another Miguel Navarro man of the match performance.  If you watched the game in May at the Dick you largely saw this game in St, Louis.  It was not good.  The main differences is that the red card this time was fully justified, a bad pass back from Yapi that Holding tried to control instead of clear and it all went sideways.

Rather than spending any more time on the game with not much to talk about we're going to take a look at where we are.  Its the midpoint of the season (17 games) and we're 3 points behind either of the Chris Armas seasons.  Now, as I pointed out in June, the schedule has not bee friendly to us but the last two games have been against weaker opposition and we've been 1-1, with one goal scored and one allowed.  This is not us stepping up our game.

We've now gone 9 games scoring 0 or 1 goals.  That's the longest single season streak since 2017 where Pablo's last game in charge kicked off a 12 game run of 0's or 1's.  (Between 2023 and 2024 we went 10 games, 3 in '23 and 7 in '24, with 0-1 goals).  The last time we put two past the opposing keeper was when Messi was in town.  This team has not come from behind to take the lead in a game this season.

Meanwhile apparently Wells "exchanged words" with the St. Louis coaching staff after the game.  This one confuses me as I can't think of anything StL did during the game that the coaching staff should be that upset about.  This is a pattern developing though where Wells goes off on the refs or the other coaching staff or something when the Rapids struggle.  It makes me start to wonder if that's his response to not having answers which, isn't great.

What we seem to have is a team bereft of offensive ideas that's slowly sinking down the table.  They're compensating for that by being at the top of the fouls and cards list (though also at the top of the fouls suffered) list and the manager is all in on the strategy.  The next two games are at home against the teams and the bottom of the Western conference.  They are both must wins, and they need to be must wins where we're clearly in control and are clearly winning the game.  If that doesn't happen its hard to see how this season goes anywhere.

Man of the Match: Miguel Navarro.  Picked ip an injury in training so didn't start, but was pressed into service after the 12th minute red card.  Shortly after entering he seemed to dislocate his finger and calmly let the training staff pop it back into place, then went out and finished the game with a strong performance.

USOC Semifinal Preview

We're off to the far side of Missouri to get a sneak peak at our U.S. Open Cup semi opponents in September as the Rapids play St. Louis tomorrow night.  StL came into the Dick back in May and stole a 1-0 win on a goal both Holding and Herrington would want back.  The Rapids need to figure out if they can fix their offense, the last time we put a crooked number on the scoreboard it was on the fully working scoreboard at Empower Field.  Kickoff tomorrow is at 6:30 MT.

No change on the injury front, but we get Miguel Navarro and Wayne Fredrick back from suspension.  Fredrick signed a new contract extension today, taking him through the 2029-2030 season with a club option for an additional season.  We'll have to wait until the salary drop in September to know what kind of raise he got.

I'm not sure who will get the start on the wings, but otherwise I feel good about this lineup.  Other than Herrington everyone gets a week off after this, so going back-to-back shouldn't be a problem for anyone.  I think Williams gets rewarded with another start and Herrington cycles in for Holding.  Wells had a lot of good things to say about Kosi Wednesday night so I see him starting again too.

Prediction: 1-1 draw, goal by Rafa.  I can't predict the Rapids getting more than 1 until they prove they can.  Meanwhile St. Louis improve during the break and I can't see them being shut out at home.  Our defense is strong enough to keep them from running us over, but I don't see 3 points coming.

It Was The Best Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times

Last night the Rapids looked like world beaters in the defensive third and midfield.  Then they looked like the world was beating on them in the attacking third.  For most of the game they held San Diego without a shot, much less any danger or xG.  San Diego didn't get their first shot until the 64th minute, but suddenly by the 69th minute they had more shots on target and more xG than the Rapids.  

That's how it was going for the home side in the attacking third.  Their best shot for most of the night came in the 9th minute and it was right against the near post, so depending on which stats you read it may not have even counted as a shot on target.  Their second one was in the 96th minute, and lucky for the us, it went in.  Colorado escaped with a 1-0 win that they both did not deserve and absolutely deserved.

The first half press looked as good as anything we saw this season.  San Diego didn't really get a controlled touch in the Rapids box until the second half.  Even in the second half it was really an 7 minute period from the 64th to the 71st where San Diego looked at all dangerous, outside of that they had two shots that were blocked with a combined total of 0.06 xG.  There was even a point where the Rapids press had won the ball right at midfield and Holding was just standing on the ball and San Diego had no energy to press him so a few seconds went by of everyone just not moving.

The problem came every time Colorado got near San Diego's box.  Great passing up to that point but they could not find a way through.  Navarro was a non-entity in this game, Minoungou kept dribbling into blind alleys, and Aaronson was more interested in passing than shooting.  There were 2-3 chances where Paxten needed to just shoot at goal and instead tried a cross pass three players or tried to dribble for a better opening, or otherwise let the opportunity go by him.  Frustrating from the $8M man.  The two times we broke through and put the ball in the net they were both, correctly, called back for offside.

Late in the match Cannon, after an iffy night for him (he was responsible for the offside that disallowed one of the goals, among other tings), was lucky not to be called for a PK.  Chris Penso was sent to the VAR monitor but returned with a no foul call.  I think that was the correct call because the PK foul was not 'clear and obvious' IMO and probably should not have been sent down.  However it was close enough that had Penson called it in real time I would have said the same thing about VAR calling down to overturn it, as it would not be clear and obviously wrong.

Finally, deep into stoppage time Aaronson got behind .the San Diego line and sent in a bit of a desperation cross to the center of the box.  Waiting there just happened to be the new guy, Loic Williams, who half volleyed a bouncer to the far post that took a slight deflection as well.  It wasn't pretty but the only goal of the match in the final minute doesn't need to be.  A great opener for him (he got the start and played all 90) and settled in well.  Its too early to really judge but the initial returns looked like we have a legitimate third starter at center back.

Speaking of which, Herrington mostly got the night off on his return from the World Cup, just having a cameo appearance in stoppage time.  I thought that was a bit odd given that he only made two appearances in the World Cup, but we do have a game on Sunday and then he's off to Charlotte as the only Rapid in the All-Star Game, so probably good load management for him.

This was a good three points for the Rapids, but it showed that we are still struggling to turn possession into dangerous chances.  I was hoping Wells could work on that over the break but it looked much like our pre-break games, just with a better press. Five of our next six games are winnable if we figure this out, but if we don't the season is all but done.

Man of the Match: Nico Hansen.  I mentioned the two shots on target at the beginning but the first one was a very dangerous attack that Hansen managed to just get a touch on and send over the bar, and the second was also a good save.  Without his efforts Williams' goal doesn't matter.

2026 Part 2

Now what are we doing again?  Oh, right, MLS season.  We've already spent enough time looking back so lets just look forward now.  The Rapids need to rack up points in July and August before the schedule gets hard again in September, and that starts tomorrow night with San Diego in town.  Colorado has not made many changes during the World Cup break, Manyoma, Murphy, and Ronan has left (Murphy will be back tomorrow night with SD) and Loic Williams has joined but that's it.  San Diego has been a bit more active.  This is 12th vs. 13th in the table so both sides are looking at this like 3 points they need to jump start their season.  Kickoff tomorrow night at the Dick is at the traditional 7:30pm.

Yuck, though not surprising.  We knew Steffen and KDP had surgeries and would be out long term.  Both M. Navarro and Frederick played dumb last game (imagine yelling at the official who was in the center for England-Argentina and thinking you were going to get away with it) to get their suspension.  Billo Diop was unlikely to ever play a big role in this game, even if we weren't expecting his injury.  Travis is the one that really hurts since M. Navarro is also out.

We don't really know how the break went but I expect this to be close.  I don't think Williams gets the start but he should be on the bench.  If Wells is uncomfortable with Cannon at LB we could see a 3-man back line with Williams starting and a couple of wingbacks (Minoungou and Thompson for example).

Prediction: 1-1 draw, goal by Rafa.  Going to be a lot of rust out there and neither of these teams were good before the break.  A draw isn't great but it would be (barely) acceptable given the time off and the player availability.  A loss would be fairly disastrous but a win is certainly not out of the question.

Top Kits Of The World Cup

One last kit post before we get back to our regularly scheduled Rapids coverage.  Going to break this down into top kits by confederation plus a couple of additional categories before doing a top X overall.

Top Kit - Oceania - New Zealand Away

With only one team, the choices were limited.  I almost went with the goalkeeper kit but that felt like cheating a bit.  The white looked better than the dark,

Top Kit - AFC - Australia Away

Yeah, I forgot Australia is Asian in FIFA terms sometimes too.  I really like the two tones of this one. A woman I work with is Australian and wore one of these to the office on game day and it looks even better in person.

Top Kit - AFC - Sportswashing Division - Saudi Arabia Home

If it weren't for what it represents this would be one of the top kits of the tournament for me.  I love the green and purple color combo with the tiled motif.  But I will not be supporting Saudi Arabia in any format.

Top Kit - UEFA - Norway Home

This is the kit I've been trying to track down with no luck, waiting too long to try to get it.  A simple design of the flag that comes off very bold.  Even with my Swedish heritage I'd be happy to have this one in the collection.

Top Kit(s) - CAF - Ivory Coast Away

I couldn't choose between my top two CAF kits so you get them both.  First the Ivory Coast away kit with this great pattern of local flora and fauna.  For a long time west Africa has had some of the great tournament kits, I have two different Cameroon ones from the 2010's.  This continues that run.

DR Congo Home

The colors of this kit really work together (even the yellow badge) and the zebra pattern gives a unique spin on the kit.  One of the kits we wouldn't have seen without the expansion to 48.  Also what the team ahs been doing to try to bring visibility to the issues in their country is important.

Top Kit -  CONMEBOL - Paraguay Away

This one surprised me as I didn't pick it out as a highlight during the kit releases.  Seeing it on the field, first against the U.S. but also later in the tournament and I was taken with how good it looked.  I like the way the white badge pops against the blues and blacks, one of the times changing the logo works.

Top Kit - CONCACAF - Haiti Home

This is the original kit before FIFA forced them to remove their freedom fighters from the kit.  Its an important nod to Haiti's history and given everything else FIFA has allowed not allowing this is another example of their double standards.  IT was a tough call between this and the third kit, which is the same design on red, but the collar works better here.

Top Kit - CONCACAF - Rivalry Division - Mexico Home

I mean, come on, that's a top-tier kit.  But its Mexico so this is the only time I'll ever admit that.

Rapids Kit Rankings Home Top 10

Time to finish this series up with the top 10 home kits!  I pre-ranked all the kits before starting this series but as I was writing them up I found myself making slight changes.  No part of the list changed more than this 10 though, I made changes all the way up to #3 while writing this.  The top 2 were always locked in though.

#10 - 2016-2017

The first kit with a legitimate jersey sponsor (ciao Ciao!) and a good team to go with it.  Nice and clean but doing nothing with the burgundy means that it can't go much higher than this.  I do like that Transamerica didn't demand a bright red logo on the front to match their company colors.

#9 - 2018 - 2019

Minimal changes form the prior jut but making the sleeves burgundy and all the trim light blue instead of the light blue/white mix makes this one the better of the two

#8 - 2024-2025

The checkered flag design, I like finally giving the burgundy some kind of design but this trends closely to one of those optical illusion images.  The light blue really pops on this one though.  Hard to believe we went to the 'Colorful Colorado' kits from this unfortunately.

#7 - 2001-2002

The true 'Aquaman' kits.  Super tight and green.  Our last green home kit ever, we wouldn't really get Rapids green back until last year's 3rd kit.  Also the final Kappa kit.  Given their skin-tight nature I had to take a pass on these for my personal collection.  This was the point where the Rapids switched from white at home and green on the road to the reverse, something they've kept through all their color combinations since (until, arguably, this season where they're black at home and green on the road).

#6 - 1996

The original.  Its hard to not put this in the top 5 but overall I thought the road kit was better.  The stripes on the shoulders just don't work for me as well as they should.  Still its a classic 90's style kit and that can't be ignored.

#5 2009-2010

I gave this a one spot boost because we won MLS Cup in this kit.  We'll always have the great memories of Casey scoring while seated and Kandji sacrificing his ACL for the MLS Cup winning goal in this shirt.  To say nothing of Drew Moor's last second clearance.  I don't love the collar on it but that's not enough to downgrade it from its importance in team history.  

#4 - 1997-1998

The kits just kept getting better in the early years.  This gave us the first use of the round badge but avoided duplication by moving the wave badge to the center of the chest.  The later 2006 road kit would be inspired by this one but this was the better version of it.  It removed the old gold color from the sleeves that stood out in a bad way to me on the first kit.

#3 - 2022-2023

Almost my top burgundy kit, I really like this one.  The sublimated mountains on this kit are great and the Colorado 'C' as the jock tag is a nice touch.  This is my current burgundy kit for game days and its going to take a lot for the 2028-2029 kit to replace it.

#2 - 2013

This, of course, had to be the top burgundy kit.  Its also the reason we have had 18 home kits but only 17 road kits.  for one season the Rapids wore this kit with the dark bands, when looking closer at the bands you'll see they're made up of a list of names.  Those were the season-ticket holders of the Rapids (the band across the chest just says 'Colorado Rapids' repeated, in case they had managed to sing a jersey sponsor, that way nobody's name would have been covered.  They didn't sign one).  My name is in the lower band across the belly.  The Rapids were at least one of the first, if not the first, clubs in the world to place their ticket holder names on the kit and it was well received.  Hard to downgrade a kit that has your name on it!

#1 - 1999-2000

There was never a doubt this one (and its away partner) were going to end up on the top of my lists.  This was the kit the team used for the first full season I followed them, it was the first kit I bought ( a signed one from a trip to Dallas that still hangs in my office) and its the one I think of when I think of "classic Rapids" like 'Celo, JDV, Agogo, Limpar, and Hahnemann, among others.  More of a throwback to this is what last year's 3rd kit should have been.

We Interrupt This Kit Blog With An Update On Rapids News

As we get close to MLS games starting again its time to get caught up on a couple of pieces of Rapids news before we finish out the kit part of the summer.

The most significant news, which still isn't high, is that Ian Murphy was traded to San Diego FC for Charlotte's second round pick next year that San Diego had acquired in a previous trade.  There's also $100K of GAM if performance metrics are meant and we keep part of his budget charge.

This is really shifting the deck chairs.  Murphy clearly wasn't in Wells' plans and a second round pick and a little GAM won't amount to much in the end.  But it frees up a roster spot.  Its also probably an indicator that Herrington isn't going anywhere this window as that would leave us awfully thin at CB.  This ends the 2024-2025 move of sending $1M plus $200K of performance incentive GAM to  Cinci for Awaziem and Murphy.  In the end that got us a few starts from Awaziem, a $1.7M transfer fee (a small portion of which went back to Cinci) and a 2nd round pick.  We didn't lose anything but I'm not sure how much we got out of that trade either.

Speaking of Herrington, the rumored list of teams interested in him has expanded to almost every major name in Europe.  Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Milan, etc.  Oddly not Arsenal though, given the shared owner.  Reports are that the Rapids have put a $25 million price tag on him and are asking for a 12-month loan back (through the sprint season) as part of the deal.  At this point he might be sold in this window, but I'd be a little surprised to see him leave in this window.  Safe bet that by this time next year he will no longer be in Commerce City though.

Two other roster moves, Manyoma has officially returned from loan with his purchase option declined, as previously reported.  Loic Williams joined the team in training a couple of weeks ago and played in the friendly Thursday night against FC Juarez.  He could be officially registered as a Rapids player yesterday and presumably was, so he should be eligible for next Wednesday's game.

Finally the FC Juarex game was a 1-1 draw after the first 90 minutes, then the teams agreed to play another 30 mintues that ended scoreless.  Both teams got very chippy during that extra time though, so much so that Rafa Navarro was sent off and the ref called the game before being convinced to restart it about 10 minutes later.  In case anyone is worried, red cards in friendlies are not carried over anywhere, though safe to say this matchup may not be repeated next summer.

Here we go with the best of the alternates!

#10 - 2007-2008

Our first light blue kit, and it really worked with the burgundy trim.  The big drawback on this one is the badge that says 'Colorado Rapids' and then right below it the big 'Colorado' across the front of the kit.  It would have been better as a clean blue kit.  I could take or leave the collar as well.

#9 - 2009-2010

See, better without the 'Colorado' on the front.  This collar works a bit better too IMO.  Otherwise only minor changes from the prior kit.

#8 - 2021-2022

The Class V mountain kit.  Love the goal to raise awareness of protection of our 14ers, love the idea of using the topographic map, loved the return to green, execution left a lot to be desired.  From any sort of distance this looked like a white kit with mint trim.  Also, once again, changing the badge which is an automatic deduction unless it knocks it out of the park, which this doesn't.  I like the clean style however.

#7 - 2001-2002

Nicknamed the Aquaman kits these were the first to shift from the baggy 90's style to the more skin-tight, hard to grab, modern style.  Great for top shape soccer players, not so great for out of shape fans like yours truly.  Otherwise it was a white kit with green trim and double Rapids logos.  Its the last Kappa road kit.

#6 - 2025-2026(?)

The current road kit.  Much like the mountains kit I love the goal of river protection, concept, and color, but execution was a stumble.  This one from a distance looks like moss or mold on the kit.  I actually like the completely different badge, I just wish it was an already established design and not something new for this kit.  We will be getting a new road kit either right before or right after the sprint season.  I think it will be before, but it a bit unclear.

#5 - 1997-1998

I like this color of green for the kit and the black trim works.  Still, it is just a green kit.  But that makes it almost top 5 on its own.

#4 - 2023-2024

The 'New Day' kit, to promote awareness of mental health.  An important topic and all the more so coming out of the pandemic.  A great design going back to our light blue secondary color and designed by local artist Pat Milbery.  This was the only one of this new run of away kits to support local movements that I think worked on all levels so far.  Still not sold by changing the badge colors, but at least its a secondary club color.

#3 - 1996

The original, and IMO still one of the best.  No big Rapids across the front, a bold green/white design for the 90's (understated for the time if anything), and the gold numbers play off the gold in the badge well.  Almost impossible to find now and impossible to find at a good price.  LAst year's anniversary kits should have taken more from this design to be a true throwback.

#2 - 2006

After four years of the awful black and blue we got some green back in our kit.  This is almost the same as the 2005 kits but the green works so much better than the blue.  Adding the green around the collar and down the inside of the sleeves was a big improvement.  I might be biased too as this was the first or the kits I went out to buy for my collection.

#1 - 1999-2000

This is easily the best road kit we've had.  A good 90's style with the white trim, the true Rapids green, and its the reverse of the home kit for consistency.  Still stuck with the double Rapids but at least this one is the circular logo as the badge and then a form of the original badge on the front of the kit.  I've got one of these in my collection but I only bring it out for important matches as its a little tight on me, and I don't want it to wear out.

Rapids Kit Rankings - Homes 18-11

The best way to move on from last night is to look back at some Rapids history, so lets rank some kits!  Seriously, I do plan to get through all of them before the Rapids return on the 22nd, but I might end up cutting it close. 🤣

#18 - 2003-2004

2003 was the start of the questionable decision to make our identity black and blue, and it sucked.  The 2003-04 away was the bottom of that list and the home joins it here.  I mean, what about that says Colorado Rapids other than literal words across the chest?

#17 - 2006

Generally the Adidas kits were better than the Athletica ones, which is why this isn't in last, but its not great.  The black shoulders and the black arc around the chest just gives it a weird cloak-like look that doesn't work.

#16 - 2005

The last of the black and blue kits, this one at least tried to do something with the fuzzy lines and the collar looks better than the 2006 version.  There's a reason you don't see this trio around at games very often, this is an era that should be forgotten, at least kit-wise.

#15 - 2007-2008

The first of the burgundy kits were certainly an improvement over the prior color scheme (putting aside the whole rebranding debacle) but as the burgundy shirts go this is my least favorite.  The 'Rapids' across the front just looked minor league and the collar never impressed me.

#14 - 2026-2028(?)

Probably the first controversial take in this list.  Yeah, current home kit sucks.  We're the burgundy boys, we play in burgundy.  Not black with burgundy highlights.  And how do you call a black kit 'Colorful Colorado'?  This gets the end over the first burgundy because it is a good looking kit, just not as a home kit for a burgundy team.

There's no clear announcement for when we'll swap this one out, with the schedule change.  What I've heard is that the normal winter new kit will arrive as planned before the sprint season, for us that would be a new away kit.  Then we'd keep this home kit through the sprint season and the first fall-spring season, before swapping it out in the summer of 2028.

#13 - 2020-2021

We're now at the point where the kits go from "yeah, that's fine" to top-tier.  None of these are bad, they're just various levels of good enough to great.  In this case the 2020 one was good enough.  The only thing that puts me off a bit is the gradient in the kit from the left shoulder to the right side contrasting with the Adidas strips going over the right shoulder.  Something about the clash in direction doesn't sit right.

#12 - 2011-12

This is about as close as you can get to a base burgundy shirt.  There's nothing wrong with it but there's nothing that stands out.  It got a one spot boost over #13 because its the first one to have a star on the kit.

#11 - 2014-15

This was a better way of incorporating the flag than the away kits I rated in the last article.  I liked that big C across the front back when a jersey sponsor was a long shot for us.  The white sleeves set off nicely from it as well.
