The Rapids put out their reserve side plus normal starters Kimura and Ballouchy last night. Within 4 minutes they were down a goal and it wasn't looking good. Enter new acquisition Wells Thompson He scored off a Jamie Smith corner kick in the first half and a feed from Claudio Lopez via Ballouchy in the 80th minute. Prior to this game Thompson's only other USOC goal was the winning goal for the Revs in the 2007 final. Lopez's assist came one minute after entering the game for his first appearance as a Rapid.The Rapids will now play the winner of the game between the New England and the winner of the Philly-NY game. The date and location of that game are still to be determined. The winner of that game will enter the true U.S. Open Cup in the 3rd Round with the 6 auto-qualified MLS teams and the winner of the other qualification spot.

With Smith getting some minutes, and Thompson hitting the net, hopefully Ballouchy finds himself on the bench Sunday. To me, he has been the weakest link on the pitch the in all 3 games so far.
I've been thinking, for the last couple games, that Thompson should have started. He has brought great energy and attracking impitus to the feild when he came on as a sub. I would think he has earned a chance to start if Smith isn't 100%.
