Rapids Power Down In The Transfer WIndow
Well, that was anti-climatic. After multiple published statements about improving the team in this window we got a new German winger who hasn't even started training with the team yet and at essentially literately at the deadline last night we swapped unwanted players with Orlando. We'll start with last night's trade then look at the (lack of) activity int he window as a whole.
The basics of this trade is that we sent Dillon Powers,, who's contract is reported to be up at the end of the season, to Orlando for Luis Gil, who's on-loan from Queretaro of Liga MX until the end of the season.
That's the short answer, if you don't care about the gory details of MLS roster rules skip this paragraph. Orlando also sent $100K in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) along with Gil and both teams agreed to keep the cap hit for their original player (Powers' cap hit is about double Gil's). The reason for the TAM is that Gil was originally a FSL player and they retained his MLS rights when he left. As part of the deal loaning Gil to Orlando, Orlando had to acquire his rights from FSL. They agreed to a minimum of $50K in TAM. Also with every loan deal into MLS there's an option to buy the player. The loan deal stipulated that if Orlando bought Gil at the end of the season the deal for Gil's rights from FSL would go up to $100K in TAM. Colorado has taken over Orlando's place in the contract with this trade so we will pay $50K of TAM if we don't keep him and $100K of TAM if we do to FSL at the end of the year. The reason the teams didn't trade cap hits is that with the window closed it really doesn't matter since any cap relief either team might have gotten couldn't be used until the offseason window, at which point both players would be out of contract anyway.
This is a pretty meh trade for the Rapids. Gil and Powers are players with similar skills and similar difficulty finding their place on their old teams. Gil is a bit more offensively minded than Powers, which the Rapids need, but I still where he'll play under Pablo. Overall this is really an extended loan for both players with the teams having the ability to walk away at the end of the season if it doesn't work out.
Overall this was a wasted transfer window where the Rapids didn't finish the job they promised had started with the Cronin/Burch trade. Remember the quote at the time of the trade was that it gave them the financial flexibility to target an offense threat and the rumors going into the window were a midfielder, a forward, and an outside back was the plan. Even when the window opened Pablo told the Post that the plan was two players, one that would "raise the level of play". Well, we got two players, barely, but not without having to give something up to do it, which doesn't scream "financial flexibility".
As one commentator on the league tweeted today, the Rapids have traded Cronin, Burch, and Powers for Saied, Gatt, and Gil. That's amazingly bad by the Front Office. Two of three players would be likely starters on many MLS teams and while I think Powers needed a change of scenery I think he can become a starter, elsewhere. In return we got 3 players who would be unlikely to start for most MLS teams and who don't fix our core problem, our inability to score.
Since the end of last season we've now added a total of 3 experienced players without giving anyone up. Boateng, who's spending more time on the bench than the field, Gordon, who's good for 20 minutes a game, tops, and now Aigner, who won't even start training with the team until next week. combined they've played 775 of a possible 3780 minutes, just over 20%.
Shockingly, a team that got rid of players like Jermaine Jones, Marco Pappa, and Sebastian Le Toux and replaced them with experience that only plays 20% of their possible minutes has gotten significantly worse. Even worse than that, the Front Office has given no indication that they realize this is a problem or care about fixing it. They are just stringing the fans along like suckers, now talking about the next transfer window in the winter and hoping we forget about their comments about the window that just closed.
The Rapids failed this transfer window, possibly the biggest failure they've had since they did nothing in the 2014 summer window. There's a term for doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The Rapids should learn it.

Affiliations, Transfer Rumors, and Playoff Opponent
An eclectic list of news and rumors today:
The Rapids renewed their affiliation with the USL Charlotte Independence for another season today. This is a little bit of a surprise as it seemed like Colorado was leaning towards a relationship with the Switchbacks. Maybe they still have different viewpoints on how the relationship might work or maybe the Rapids are just happy staying with Charlotte given Hinchey's relationship with the Independence owners.
Two interesting transfer rumors surfaced from MLS Transfers today. They're track record is a little hit or miss so I wouldn't put much weight into these:
Axel Sjoberg:
Dillon Powers:
Now I don't see Powers saving Blackburn from relegation so this better not be the only big move they're considering in the winter transfer window. ;)
Finally, LA beat FSL tonight 3-1 so we're headed to the StubHub Center for our first playoff game on Sunday. Time is still to be announced. During the season we played 0-0 and 1-1 draws in LA while beating them here 1-0. Those results would get us through to the conference finals if we repeat them. Its a little concerning how LA has turned on its offense tonight but that could jusst be because FSL has been a bad team for two months.

I'm hearing Axel Sjoberg has been gaining interest from Djurgardens (his youth club) and Ostersunds FK.I'm not sure this would be a great move for a player like Sjoberg except for him it would be going home. I don't think a mid-tier top league team (Djurgardens) or a recently promoted team (Ostersunds) in Sweden would be a step up but you can't downplay the appeal of playing in your home country,
Dillon Powers:
Source tells me Dillon Powers has interest from Blackburn. May trial in the offseason. As a Blackburn fan I'm not sure how I feel about this one. :D If Jones re-signs for the Rapids or hey plan to bring in another Jones-type player its certainly time for Powers to leave. As we've seen he doesn't really have a starting spot with Jones or that type of player here. He was probably going to move to a Championship side last season until Reading made a managerial change. Its the right level for him and would probably be a good move for everyone involved on this side of the pond.

Two Bits Of News
After two weeks we've got a bit of news coming out of the Rapids. First the "smaller" news. Dillon Powers' trial at Reading FC of the English Championship has been extended for a week. This is nothing but good news, if they had no real interest they would have just let him go. Apparently they had a second similar player on trial at the same time and didn't extend him so they are taking a serious look at Powers as a long-term solution.
Now the big news. From Marco Cummings on Twitter (Cummings has covered the Rapids at time for both the Post and MLSSoccer.com):
If you feed the link above through a translator you'll see that Real Sociedad is asking for 15 million Euros (about 16 million dollars) for Vela, since they have him under contract through the 2017-18 season. This would be, by far, the biggest transfer fee ever paid by MLS (the current record is $10 million for Michael Bradley). My bet is that a large part of the negotiations is working on getting that number down to something closer to Bradley's number. Normally on transfer fees the club pays the transfer fee but for certain "key" DPs the league has stepped in and covered part or all of the transfer fee. They did so for players like Bradley, Dempsey, Valeri, and Gaby Torres. I would expect the league to do something similar here if a deal is reached. That still leaves a multi-million dollar salary that KSE will be paying.
This is a deal the Rapids must get done. This team has historically over-promised and under-delivered. They've now made it official that they are willing to spend big money for a big player. Coming off our worst two-season run in team history this is the type of signing this team needs. Even if he's not worth $20 million in transfer fee and salary on the field (or whatever they negotiate ti down to) he's worth it off the field in sponsorship revenue, ticket sales, jersey sales, and as an indicator to the fan base the the Rapids are doing something to turn this ship around.
If Vela decides he doesn't want to come to MLS, fine. Sometimes the player just isn't interested. If that's the case though the Rapids MUST have a back up plan for another record (for the team) signing and they MUST get it done before the start of the 2016 season. They can't go on the record about Vela, fail to get him, and then sign nobody else of note before the season. That's just more of the same talk but no action this team has historically shown. There's NO excuse for Vela to play for another MLS team next year. Paul Bravo has confirmed that the Rapids have the first Discovery claim on Vela. We now know we're in negotiations with Vela. If Vela were to end up somewhere else in the league it would be a complete failure by the Front Office.
Now the big news. From Marco Cummings on Twitter (Cummings has covered the Rapids at time for both the Post and MLSSoccer.com):
REPORT: #Rapids96 Claudio Lopez "confirms" Colorado Rapids "in talks" with Real Sociedad and Carlos Vela http://bolavip.com/182033/piojo-claudio-lopez-confirmo-que-colorado-rapids-esta-negociando-con-carlos-vela-real-sociedad … #MLS #MEXThis is the first "on-record" confirmation that we have that the Rapids are really working on getting Vela. In reality, this is the first "on-record" confirmation that the Rapids have ever been going after a name of the stature of Vela's. This alone is a huge step for the club.

Dillon Powers On Trial With Reading
This morning The Sun reported that Dillon Powers is on trial with English Championship side Reading FC. The English club is currently dealing with a couple of midfield injuries and could use the help. It was just Friday in the Denver Post that Paul Bravo talked about how it was likely that they would be selling Powers sooner rather than later. It looks like that time might be when the window opens on January.
Reading has been home to a number of Americans over the years. Current Nats player Danny Williams is on the squad at hte moment. Former Rapid Marcus Hahnemann played the majority of his career at Reding and Bobby Convey transferred from DC to Reading in 2004. also current Rapid Kevin Doyle made 157 appearances for Reading in 4 seasons, scoring 55 times. He's already tweeted that he hope it works out there for Powers.
Overall I think this would be a good move for Powers and, if the price is right, the Rapids. Bravo is correct, we will be selling Powers sooner or later and I think he'd do better in the Championship than the rumored Serie A or Serie B transfer. Assuming we can get value for him its the best move all around. Just as long as he doesn't score or assist against Blackburn!

Busy News And Rumors Day
Lots of news, lots of rumors. We'll start with what has been reported.
- Wilmer Cabrera is hired as the new Chivas USA coach
No real surprise after the rumors of the last two days. It does knock one name off the likely coaching list for the Rapids.
- Red Bull NY has not been asked about Fraser
A bit of a surprise since Fraser seemed to be the early leader for the Rapids job in rumors. Take another one off the list.
- Colorado hires John Metgod as consultant
This one is more than a bit odd and came out of left field. Rumors have him working with a future USL team that will be the Rapids affiliate, and possibly partly-owned by them. Looking at his resume though, he'd make a good head coaching candidate. Regardless, a good mind to have helping the Rapids.
Now on to the rumors, some of them stronger than the others:
- Jamie Smith hired as Academy coach
This one seems the strongest of the rumors, with multiple people who know Smith confirming it. A good move for a guy who was probably going to retire.
- Mullan to be re-signed as player/coach
Reportedly MLS has made a new player designation in recent years for veteran players transitioning to coaching where not all their salary counts against the cap. Smith was supposed to be in that role last season but something happened, and Mullan will take it this season. Great way to bring back and experienced vet.
- Pareja's buyout (which was in his contract) could be announced as soon as tomorrow. The Rapids will get cash, allocation money, and a first round pick probably in next year's draft.
Solid, if not spectacular, package for all of this. Reportedly the Rapids will turn some of that allocation money around to bring in some players on loan. They may be using some of the cash for Metgod as well.
And a story I missed covering in the holiday last week, but Chris Klute and Shane O'Neill got callups to the January US National Team camp, and Dillon Powers was also called up but sadly had to pass due to ongoing concussion issues. Scary to think that he's still dealing with the issue at this point, especially after Pablo's issues in 2012. Hopefully he gets better soon. Great to see 3 young Rapids getting the callup though, things are looking up on that front.

Dillon Powers: 2013 Rookie of the Year
Two posts tonight, we'll get to the schedule release later this evening. First the good news for our rookies. Dillon Powers was named Rookie of the Year today, beating out teammate Deshorn Brown. Powers and Brown finished first and second in each category (club. media, and player voting) putting them far ahead of 3rd placed DeAndre Yedlin of Seattle (though the difference between Brown and Yedlin in player voting was only 1.41%). Combined the teammates got over 57% of the club votes, over 70% of the media votes, and over 41% of player votes. Combined they got over 56% of all votes, split 55/45 between them.
I was #TeamDeshorn myself, being only the second rookie in MLS history to get to double-digit goals, but I have no complaints about Dillon winning the award. He deserved it as much as Brown, and if they could have split it down the middle that would have been best.

All-Star Voting Started Today
The Rapids have 6 players on the All-Star ballots that were released today. Clint Irwin, Drew Moor, Atiba Harris, Dillon Powers, Edson Buddle, and Deshorn Brown. Normally I don't really care about the All-Star Game, its great for those players who deserve it but the game is usually not interesting to me, This year though the ASG is on July 31st in Kansas City. 3 days later the Rapids host FSL in the final Rocky Mountain Cup match, a game FSL has to win to retain the Cup.
That is the single biggest game on our schedule right now, because of the rivalry. Given that, as much as they may deserve it (especially Irwin), I'd be happiest of none of these 6 guys got names to the ASG game-day squad. There's a "2nd team" of All-Stars who get recognized and get whatever All-Star bonuses they have but are not a part of the game day festivities. I'd prefer that all 6 of the Rapids are named to the 2nd team, get the kudos, but stay in Denver and rest for the RMC game.
I'd be thrilled if none of the Rapids made the game day squad and all 6 of FSL's nominees did. Flying from New York back to Salt Lake after their Saturday game, then flying from Salt Lake to KC, playing mid-week, then flying from KC to Denver is much better than the Rapids who are hosting LA the weekend before and then staying in Denver until the RMC game a week later.
If you want to vote (for players from whatever team ;) ) the ballot is here.

Rapids Choose 3 In Draft
In today's Superdraft the Rapids stuck with their 3 picks at 6, 11, and 25 and picked up a trio of players who I expect to make the team and contribute.
Going into the draft the talk was that Colorado really wanted CB Walker Zimmerman and he fell to #6 but the Rapids surprised everyone and took UCF forward Deshorn Brown. DeShorn is a junior at Central Florida and was signed under the Generation Adidas program, which means he doesn't count against the cap and is automatically protected in any expansion drafts. He's Jamaican, so he will take up an international slot, leaving us 2 open slots. He was named to the 2012 All-PDL Team and the Conference USA All Conference team. At 6'3" he'll be a good target for Rivero's free kicks into the box.
At #11 Colorado took Notre Dame midfielder Dillon Powers. He is one of a few seniors to already have signed a contract with MLS due to his high level of play in college. He was also considered one of the best midfielders at the combine. Powers has played for the U.S. U-18 and U-20 teams, being named MVP of the 2010 Milk Cup with the U-20 team.
With their final pick the Rapids took left back Kory Kindle from CSU Bakersfield. Kindle is a senior but has not yet signed a contract. He stood out as one of the better left backs at this draft, but he is a converted left mid.
Combined with the announcement of Kevin Harbottle this morning the Rapids are up to 25 players on the roster for training camp. The other 21 players reported to Commerce City today for the first day of fitness tests, with training starting this weekend. I'm sure today's additions will join them shortly. The four rounds of the Supplemental Draft will be held on Thursday, the Rapids have a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
Here's our current roster as we enter camp.
Goalkeepers:
Steward Ceus
Matt Pickens
Defenders:
Diego Calderon
Kory Kindle - Unsigned draftee
Chris Klute (on loan from Atlanta through late-Sept)
Drew Moor
Anthony Wallace
Marvell Wynne
Midfielders:
Davy Armstrong
Eric Avila - Unsigned Re-Entry draftee
Tony Cascio
Jaime Castrillon
Kevin Harbottle
Pablo Mastroeni
Brian Mullan
Shane O'Neill
Dillon Powers
Martin Rivero (on loan from Rosario Central through 2013)
Nathan Sturgis
Hendry Thomas
Forwards:
Andre Akpan
Deshorn Brown
Edson Buddle
Atiba Harris
Kamani Hill
