Rapids Lose, Out of USOC

Last night Colorado's U.S. Open Cup campaigned started and ended. The Fire beat the Rapids 2-1. Chicago used most of their first team while not a single regular starting XI member of the Rapids even traveled to Illinois. Despite that the Fire still needed a 40+ yard bomb from Anibaba to beat our reserves. The starting 11 for the Rapids was:

Joyce
Palguta - Marshall - Holody - LaBauex
Nyassi - Nane - Emory - Thompson
Akpan - Amarikwa

New signing Josh Janniere got 10 minutes in place of Emory at the end of the game. The Rapids goal was scored by Andre Akpan just a minute after the halftime break to level the score at 1-1. Amarikwa had the assist.

With the loss the Rapids will have to wait until 2012 to get another shot at the U.S. Open Cup. They now return their focus to the league, and in august, the CONCACAF Champion's League.

Earls and Janniere Finally Signed

The Rapids have just announced the long-rumored signings of defender Danny Earls and midfielder Josh Janniere. Getting Janniere cost us a 3rd round supplemental pick in 2013. Ouch, that's going to0 hurt. ;)

Here's our current roster:

Under Contract:
Goalkeepers:
Steward Ceus
Ian Joyce
Matt Pickens

Defenders:
Danny Earls
Michael Holody
Kosuke Kimura
Tyrone Marshall
Drew Moor
Scott Palguta
Anthony Wallace
Marvell Wynne

Midfielders:
Davy Armstrong
Steven Emory
Josh Janniere
Ross LaBauex
Jeff Larentowicz
Pablo Mastroeni
Brian Mullan
Joseph Nane
Sanna Nyassi
Jamie Smith
Wells Thompson

Forwards:
Andre Akpan
Quincy Amarikwa
Conor Casey
Omar Cummings
Caleb Folan
Macoumba Kandji

That's 28 of 30 roster slots filled (31 roster slots while Kandji is on the IR).

First USOC Play-In Tomorrow!

The Rapids have a short turn around after Saturday's match as they are in the Chicago area tonight for their first U.S. Open Cup play-in game. The game is actually in Peoria. The winner of the match will face the winner of the San Jose/Portland/Chivas USA pod for a spot in the full USOC.

Meanwhile there's some news about player availability. Koz continues his bad month by getting shingles (and I may have to change my player of the game against Chivas if he played through that!) and Jamie Smith has migraines. Omar Cummings is still in Jamaica, but a airplane snafu kept Sanna Nyassi from joining the Gambian National Team and he'll be available tomorrow night.

The Rapids have 4 games in the two weeks starting tomorrow. Meanwhile Chicago has two, separated by 10 days. so I fully expect the Fire to field their regular starting XI while Colorado puts out a full set of reserves. While I would love to see the Rapids take a stronger lineup to Chicago I can understand that the combination of fixtures, injuries, and international call-ups makes that difficult.

I'm not going to make a prediction on this game, as its difficult without knowing for sure what lineups to expect. My gut is saying the Rapids play well but end up losing though.

Down Goes Fraser!

Well that was some ugly soccer played on Saturday night. The Rapids midfield couldn't hold the ball and the Colorado forwards couldn't do much with it when they did get it. Despite that the Rapids managed to get a win over Chivas while only getting a combined 11 minutes out of the C+C Goal Factory.

Casey was a late scratch from the starting XI, which means Quincy Amarikwa got his 4th ever MLS start and Caleb Folan got into his first MLS game through the starting lineup. Otherwise it was the same group that started against Portland. Unfortunately it wasn't the same level of play. While Pickens and the back 4 were on their game the ball seemed to get to midfield and die. Mullan was pretty invisible and Pablo and Larentowicz seemed to only have their defensive game. In the 32nd minute they finally put all the pieces together and Jamie Smith sprung Amarikwa behind the defense. Q ran onto the ball and tapped it past an on-rushing Snack Thornton. He also had to hurdle the onrushing Snack Thornton in order to complete the play. After his 110m hurdles he had an empty net to finish in and give the Rapids a 1-0 lead.

After that it was a dull game played mainly in midfield. Outside of he goal each team only had 1 shot on goal, a shot right at Thornton by Folan and a cross/shot that Pickens had to tip off the crossbar by Chivas USA. The more interesting was the number of yellow cards handed out. Pickens got one for dissent after Justin Braun tossed Brian Mullan to the ground and Wallace, Casey, and Pablo got them for time wasting. Somehow that added up to 6(!) minutes of stoppage, most of which Chivas failed to look dangerous in.

My key to the game was Cummings replacement. Turns out that both Cummings and Casey were replaced. Still the forwards got the job done, you only need one goal when your defense keeps the other side from scoring.

Stats of the Game: There are two stats from this week's game.
  • With the win the Rapids have started 2-0-0 for the first time in their history.
  • This was the first time since Oct 12th, 2008 that neither Casey or Cummings started in a league match.
Other Observations:
  • As bad as I made the offense sound, the defense was airtight. The tip off the crossbar was the only attack of any danger from Chivas.
  • Drew Moor had his typical quietly solid game. He's perhaps the most underrated defender in the league.
  • I'm not sure if putting Casey in the game was necessary, but the holding up front was much better once he came in.
  • Larentowicz looked to have a case for a red card and PK on a handball off the line. Its really hard to tell from the replay but it looked like it came off an extended arm.
  • The cards for time wasting on Wallace and Pablo we're really ticky-tack. Casey deserved his though.
Player of the Game: Jamie Smith. In a game where most of the midfield seemed AWOL most of our successful attacks came through him. He also had a great pass for the assist on the goal.

Colorado Tries To Get Chivas' Goat

You're getting my game preview a day early because I have concert tickets tomorrow night and won't be around. ;) Saturday night the Rapids make their first road trip of the season, heading to LA to face the Under-A-Chivas, now coached by former Rapid Robin Fraser.

Kickoff is at 8:30pm MDT and the game is on Altitude 2. For those of you on Comcast like me there's no dedicated Altitude 2 channel, instead it shares with the Colorado Entertainment Channel on 105. Unfortunately we're going to have to live with SD this week. Class VI and the Pid Army are hosting a viewing party at the Celtic in downtown Denver and up North at CB & Potts in Collinsdale. The MLS Cup will be in attendance at CB & Potts!

Injury Report:
OUT: FW Macoumba Kandji (L knee ACL tear)
DOUBTFUL: FW Andre Akpan (L hamstring strain)

International Absences:
MF Sanna Nyassi - Gambia
FW Omar Cummings - Jamaica

The drawback to the grown of Omar Cummings is weekends like this, where Cummings plays for Jamaica instead of Colorado. The flip side is that Chivas has 3 players on international duty including 2 of last week's starting defenders. Their injury report is equal to ours, so we're pretty much at equal strength. My guess at the linup:

Pickens
Kimura - Wynne - Moor - Wallace
Mullan - Mastroeni - Larentowicz - Smith
Folan - Casey

The Rapids posted a video of Gary Smith today talking about how Folan is in the mix for this weekend. Games like this is why we signed him, and being at sea level I think we see him get the start. The other choice, with two forwards on the injury report, is Amarikwa and I don't think he's ready to be starting yet. Otherwise there's no reason to make any changes.

Key To Look For: Cummings replacement, be it Folan or Amarikwa. We made our good run last year by being consistent in our lineup, especially up front. This will be an adjustment for the team and for the new starter. If they can't threaten or work with the team the Chivas defense will close down on Casey and frustrate our offense.

Prediction: 2-1 Rapids win. Goals by Folan and Mullan. Chivas' defense looked pretty questionable last week, and it gets worse with their international losses. The focus will be on Casey and I think that will allow a couple of other players to get on the scoreboard. Its hard to predict the first road game of the year, but I don't think we'll get a shutout.

Josh Janniere Might Be Signed?

Mixed signals from the Rapids on the status of trialist Josh Janniere. There's been no "official" announcement but Gary Smith mentioned the signing in his pre-taped pre-game interview before Saturday's game. Also I stumbled onto Janniere's Facebook while researching for more information and it shows a picture of his locker in the Rapids locker room and his employer lists the Rapids. However he played 30 minutes in this week's reserve game against School of Mines. The official report of the game shows him as a non-roster player. So its unclear at this point if he's been signed or not, but it seems like there's a good chance he will be signed, if he hasn't been signed yet. Or something like that.

Rapids Fell The Timbers

That's how you start a season! The Rapids celebrated their championship and then did what champions do, put an end to an expansion team's hope early and often.

8 minutes in Omar Cummings proved that he's only gotten better, splitting two defenders at the corner flag and pulling his patented run at the box and cross move. The ball squirted free to an on-rushing Ginger Ninja and the Rapids season started with a bang! 20 minutes later it was Omar's turn to get on the board as he took a long ball off of Casey's head and bore down on former Rapids and current Timber keeper Adin Brown. Brown made the initial save but the ball popped free and fell to Cummings' feet (from a fortuitous bounce off of his shoulder/chest area) and Omar hit the empty net to double the score. We had barely sat down after that celebration when Jaime Smith ended up with the ball 30+ yards from goal with nobody in front of him and hammered it home off the crossbar to give the Rapids a 3-0 lead in 30 minutes.

For the rest of the game the Rapids took the air out of the ball and worked on their passing drills. The Timbers only threatened one time, a innocuous free kick from about 30 years that sneaked under the wall and past Matt Pickens for the Timbers' first goal in MLS history. Colorado put Amarikwa and newcomer Sanna Nyassi in the game and the two of them decided that they wanted another goal, even of the rest of the team was done for the night. They didn't get it, but they made Adin Brown come up with a couple of big saves to deny them.

My key to the game was the team not overlooking this game and relaxing in the good feelings of the championship celebration. The way they came out you would have thought they just watched Salt Lake lift the trophy. resting on their laurels does not look like it will be a problem for this team.

Other Observations:
  • I love the subtext in the Rapids Champions sign. Its not "2010 MLS Champions", its a MLS Champions sign with a 2010 logo underneath it. The obvious inference is that the team plans to add more logos underneath the champions sign.
  • Leaving the flags at the seats made for a nice visual, well done by the Front Office.
  • Jaime Smith followed up his bomb of a goal with second bomb that Brown had to save in the second half. that's a nice added weapon to have coming out of midfield.
  • Sanna Nyassi looked like a great pickup. Its only one game but he's a nice late game sub.
  • Amarikwa looks to have improved significantly in the offseason. He's still got a ways to go though. I can see him being the next success story of the Rapids reserve side.
  • Pablo was a bit lucky not to see red on his card. That could have gone either way.
  • I'm not sure the last time a MLS team started the season with the same starting XI they started in MLS Cup.
  • Its great to be back in season!
Player of the Game: Omar Cummings. A goal and an assist. He was quick to show that the biggest move the Rapids made in the offseason was not making a move by not selling him.

Rapids Raise Championship Banner Tomorrow!

Before I start this I wanted to point out the request for help that Kosuke Kimura wrote for the New York Times soccer blog today. I've added the link to the Red Cross donation page he linked to on the top of the right column and I'll leave it there for the season. Please help if you can, and the supporters are planning another auction/raffle for the Red Cross for some point this season. I'll post news on that as it comes.

Tomorrow night the Colorado Rapids will celebrate their 2010 MLS Cup victory by raising a championship banner at the Dick. Oh, there's also the season opening game. ;) The Rapids welcome the Portland Timbers to Major League Soccer as they play their first ever MLS game. Oddly enough the Rapids will bookend their season by ending it in Vancouver against the other expansion team.

Game time at the Dick tomorrow is at 7pm, but the Rapids are encouraging everyone to get to their seats by 6:30 in order to see the banner raising and other parts of the champions ceremony. Class VI and Pid Army will start the tailgate at 4pm. The location this year is in the same West VIP parking lot, but we're moving to to the East end of that lot, directly in front of the Cantina.

Injury Report:
OUT: FW Macoumba Kandji (L knee ACL tear)
QUESTIONABLE: DF Tyrone Marshall (R hamstring strain)
PROBABLE: GK Matt Pickens (R groin strain/R hamstring strain)

Its a little concerning seeing Pickens on the injury list already, hopefully its just the rust getting knocked off the muscles. I'm sure he'll be ready to start tomorrow. Portland has 3 players out and a 4th questionable. I think the starting XI is fairly obvious, but here's my best guess:
Pickens
Kimura - Wynne - Moor - Wallace
Mullan - Mastroeni - Larentowicz - Smith
Cummings - Casey

I'd be shocked if we saw anyone else, but who knows what Gary Smith has planned. I expect Caleb Folan to be suited up and available off the bench, but I don't know if we'll actually see him.

Key To Look For: The Rapids need to not overlook this game. Its the opening game of the season, against an expansion team, and preceded by a big ceremony celebrating last year's accomplishments. It would be very easy for the team to take the game for granted. John Spencer will have his guys ready to play and they're going to want to make a good first impression in the league. If we don't keep our focus we could get burned.

Prediction: 2-0 Rapids win. Goals by Casey and Cummings. Despite my concern about overlooking this game I think Colorado will want to put on a show. Casey and Cummings will come out and push a questionable Timber defense until it breaks, and the back 4 will be able to handle Kenny Cooper Jr.

Rapids Release Eddie Ababio

The Rapids just tweeted that first-round pick defender Eddie Ababio has been released. He was offered a contract at the same time as Steven Emory and Michael Holody. Given that I'm guessing that Ababio thought he was worth more than the Rapids were offering and declined to sign the contract, and the Rapids declined to increase their offer. Colorado retains their claim to him until next year's draft, at which point he'd be free to sign with any MLS team without compensation to the Rapids.

Game preview coming later tonight!

Cummings and Nyassi get callups

Omar Cummings has been called into the Jamaican National Team for their games on Friday March 25th in Jamaica and Sunday March 27th in El Salvador. Sanna Nyassi has been called into the Gambian National Team for their game in Equatorial Guinea on March 29th. Both players will miss the trip to LA for the game against Chivas USA on March 26th. Hopefully Folan will be ready to partner with Casey by then.

Roster Update

Here's our current roster and list of trialists:

Under Contract:
Goalkeepers:
Steward Ceus
Ian Joyce
Matt Pickens

Defenders:
Michael Holody
Kosuke Kimura
Tyrone Marshall
Drew Moor
Scott Palguta
Anthony Wallace
Marvell Wynne

Midfielders:
Davy Armstrong
Steven Emory
Ross LaBauex
Jeff Larentowicz
Pablo Mastroeni
Brian Mullan
Joseph Nane
Sanna Nyassi

Conor Casey
Omar Cummings
Caleb Folan
Macoumba Kandji

Offered Contract:
Defenders:
Eddie Ababio

Trialists:
Defenders:
Danny Earls

Midfielders:
Josh Janniere

That's 29 players that are either signed or working with the Rapids. We can carry 30, and with Kandji still recovering from his ACL tear he'll probably start the year on IR allowing us to carry another player until he's healthy. we drafted Philip Bannister, a forward, but he is still recovering from an injury and isn't expected to join the team for his trial until later in the year. There's also Martin John that the Rapids are reportedly keeping an eye on.

Folan (Finally) Signed

The Rapids have finally announced the long-rumored Caleb Folan signing. Folan arrived in Colorado yesterday and trained with the team today. He will be available for selection against Portland on Saturday. Contract terms were not announced but we'll get to see the salary once the MLS Player's Union releases the salary list later this month or early next month.

Folan will be the first option off the bench for Casey or Cummings once he gets up to speed. He'll likely start the U.S. Open Cup qualifier and may get starts in Champion's League play.

I'll try to post an updated roster later tonight.

2011 Season Preview

This year starts on a much better note than the last 3 years. Before our first kick of 2011 we'll be raising our 2010 Champions banner (I assume)! That's a much better place to be than on a 3-year playoff drought like last year. With the added CONCACAF Champions League games the Rapids have a full schedule this year. This year's preview will probably be a bit shorter than prior ones, mainly because so little has changed this offseason.

Goalkeeper:
There have been no changes in the nets for the Rapids since the end of MLS Cup 2010. Pickens is still the starter, Joyce is expected to be his backup, and Ceus is the young guy waiting in the wings. While Casey deserved the MLS Cup MVP award, it could have easily been given to Pickens as well. He's one of the more underrated keepers in the league. I feel fairly confident with him in goal. Joyce looked capable in his one start last year, hopefully Pickens back spasms won't reappear but if they do I think we'll be OK.

Defense:
Since I wrote my 2010 preview the Rapids made two major changes to the back line, trading for Marvell Wynne and Anthony Wallace. Wynne was probably the biggest surprise of 2010. When he came over from Toronto most people thought he was a speedy outside back that couldn't read the game well. Gary Smith threw him right into the mix at center back and Wynne excelled. He still relies on his speed more than he should but he's partnered well with Moor. Wallace looks like our left back of the future. He's still working on his positioning (he was way out of position on Dallas' goal in MLs Cup) but that's a teachable skill. Kimura and Moor round out the defense, giving us a very young group. After Baudet and Earls were traded before the expansion draft Tyrone Marshall was added to help bring some experience to that group and Michael Holody was re-signed to join Scott Palguta to give us some depth. Draft pick Eddie Ababio has been offered a contract and Danny Earls is training with the team this week after being cut by Seattle, he may also be re-signed.

Midfield:
The biggest changes in the team this off-season have come in midfield. Claudio Lopez and Ciaran O'Brien were waived after getting little playing time in Colorado. The Rapids traded for Sanna Nyassi (Seattle) and Joseph Nane (Toronto) to replace the lost depth. They've also signed Steven Emory from Metro State. Along with Wells Thompson this gives the Rapids a young set of midfielders to back up the older starting foursome of Mullan, Mastroeni, Larentowicz, and Smith. There's also academy product Davy Armstrong and 2010 draft pick Ross LaBauex who are expected to get experience in the reserve league.

Forward:
C+C Goal Factory is back to make "EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!" for another season. The best strike duo in the league, the only question around Casey and Cummings is when Cummings will eventually be sold to a European team. Depending on how well he plays in the Gold cup and what affect it has on Jamaica's FIFA ranking that could be as soon as the summer transfer window. With the added fixtures and the possibility of losing Cummings the Rapids have been looking to add depth up front and seem to have found it in Caleb Folan from Hull City. The signing has not been officially announced but rumor has it that the deal is done and he'll be arriving this week. Mac Kandji is still rehabbing from the torn ACL he received while forcing the MLS cup winning goal. Anything we get out of him this season should be considered a bonus. Amarikwa and Akpan will get a ton of starts for the reserve squad and spot time as late game subs for the first-team.

Coaching:
Gary Smith made enough right moves last year, and has followed that up with a solid if unspectacular off-season. Looking at the play and the results last year, the biggest mistake he made was sticking with the 4-5-1 far too long,t he team didn't take off until they reverted back to a 4-4-2. When asked about moving Cummings back to the midfield during the Arizona pre-season trip Smith indicated that wasn't likely, so he seems to have learned that lesson. Certainly after the return to the 4-4-2 and the late-season trades the Rapids proved that they could hang with any team in the league, so there was no reason to make significant changes to the starting XI in the off-season.

Front Office:
The Rapids FO did what needed doing this off-season, at least on the field. They didn't make any major moves because none were needed, and the trade of Earls and Baudet for Vaegnas in order to protect players like Kandji and Kimura in the expansion draft was a very good piece of work. Especially now that it looks like we could re-sign Earls anyway. The preset move with Portland to have them pick Wallace (so we could protect Thompson) and then trade him back to us for allocation money shows they learned form their mistake with Harvey last year, and then to grab Nyassi from Seattle (by way of Vancouver) for an international slot was working the system to full effect. The team still has 5 slots to fill, but with players like Folan, Ababio, Janniere, and Bannister still working with the team in various roles there are options to fill those slots. the one thing the FO has yet to do is find a jersey sponsor. For the most part that's no big deal, but the money from it would be nice if we ever wanted to sign a Designated Player.

Intangibles:
The fact that we're returning our starting XI from MLS Cup 2010 means that the team should hit the ground running. With a fairly easy opening 3 games against an expansion team and the worst team from each conference last year. Two of those are home matches, so starting with anything less than 7 points would be a disappointment. Last year the Rapids lost only 2 games at home (and one of those was to the eventual Shield winner) but they had 5 draws so they barely won half their home games. If the Rapids want to push for one of the automatic playoff spots by finishing in the top 3 they need to get that win number to double digits. That would have gotten them 3rd last year.

Prediction:
With the addition of a minimum of 5 more competitive games than the Rapids played all of last year I don't think they'll be pushing for the Supporter's Shield. I do think they're in the upper half of the West and in the top 6 overall. I expect the Rapids to be in a playoff position all season and clinch a spot without too much trouble. The fight will be to avoid the extra wild-card game by finishing in the top 3 in the West. That battle could go down to the final games. The draw for the USOC has us on the road for both play-in games so I expect a quick exit from that competition. Its hard to know what our Champion's League fate will be until we see the draw in August and how the team will approach it, but I expect that we'll at least put up a good fight.

A Way To Help Japan

Tomorrow night at the Supporters Kick-Off Party (5pm-8pm at the Celtic tavern) Class VI and the Pid Army will have a special raffle. A team autographed burgundy jersey and a autographed Kosuke Kimura Japanese Heritage Night poster from 2009 will be raffled off for $5 a ticket. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Red Cross for earthquake relief in Japan.

We all know Kimura is the only Japanese player in MLS. He has been able to contact his friends and family back home and everybody is OK. Koz is one of the fan favorites, both for his play and the way he leaves it all on the field for his team. He's the one getting the fans hyped up before the opening kickoff. Let's show him how much we appreciate him by giving as much as we can to help out his country after one of the biggest natural disasters in recorded history.

News and Notes

Sorry for the false alarm on the game stream last night. Turns out it was only available in the Seattle area. The Rapids lost 3-1, but the Rapids didn't give up a goal until 3rd string keeper Steward Ceus was subbed in, and the last two came after Gary Smith made wholesale changes to the lineup.

Meanwhile there's news on a couple of players. First it looks like the Caleb Folan deal is all but official. Hull City has agreed to release him for free and Folan has agreed to a deal on both ends. It will probably still be a few days or so until an official announcement as all the paperwork gets processed (lengthy when its an international transfer).

Colorado is also looking at Martin John, a 22 year-old left back currently on loan from Cardiff City to Newport County in the Championship. John crew up in Canada and attended the University of Buffalo, but was born in London. His only professional experience is 7 games in his current loan spell with Newport, so this would be competition for Anthony Wallace. If the Rapids make a deal he wouldn't be able to move until the summer transfer window.

Charity Shield match streamed on-line tonight

I'm busy celebrating my birthday tonight so this is short. King5.com will be streaming the Sounders season preview tonight, which will include live footage from the Sounders-Rapids Charity Shield match at Qwest. Kickoff is at 8pm MST. I'll have a post about what happens and some possible player news either tomorrow or Friday.

TV and Roster News

Two big pieces of news today. first the Rapids officially announced that they'll be back on altitude in HD this year for 27 games. That appears to be every non-FSC or ESPN game, and the two ESPN games will be rebroadcast on Altitude. When the games overlap a Nuggets or Avalanche game the game will be on Altitude 2. All the games will have a 30-minute pre-game show and the home games will have a 30-minute post-game locker room report. They'll rotate through 6 different play-by-play guys, using the whole Nuggets and Avalanche staff and also pulling in local independent (and View From the Couch favorite) play-by-play guy Marc Stout. Rapids legend Marcelo Balboa will continue to do color commentary.

The bigger piece of news is that both Mike Holody and Steven Emory have signed contracts with the team. Today was roster and salary compliance day, which means all teams had to get down to 30 players and below the salary cap. This doesn't mean that teams can't continue to sign players, just now if they sign anyone they have to fit in under the roster and salary limits. With today's signings the Rapids currently have 25 of a possible 30 players under contract. We won't know the salary cap room they have until after the Union releases the salaries after the seasons starts. Here's the roster as we know it right now:

Under Contract:
Goalkeepers:
Steward Ceus
Ian Joyce
Matt Pickens

Defenders:
Michael Holody
Kosuke Kimura
